Depew Japanese-Inspired Front Garden

Client: Depew family

Size: 15 ft x 30 ft, plus additional plants by foundation

Needed: Planting needed to be colorful, restful, provide some privacy and to withstand lots of foot traffic. Also, it needed to be deer resistant.

Solution: I planned a red Japanese maple (Acer 'Bloodgood') to give a focal point from the dining room window and also from the seating under the pergola. Two grapevines and a golden hops were planted to climb the pergola for shade and interest. White Japanese anemones will grow tall near the pergola and window, as well as three large ornamental grass, Miscanthus 'Morning Light,' to lend some summer privacy, without being over-domineering.  A secondary stone path surrounded by Sedum 'Acre' gives visitors, or playing children, a path to the sidewalk.

Evergreen shrubs and perennials were added throughout the design for winter interest. Similar plants were also added along the house foundation to tie in the new design.

Date: Planted June 2013
